Sunscreen and Suntan Lotion Stains

Hot, sunny days require sunscreen and suntan lotion. While most people use these products to help protect their skin from the sun, others use them to enhance their skin tone.

Unfortunately, the components found in most sunscreens and suntan lotions can cause stains to fabrics. Most of these skin care products contain oils to make them moisture-resistant. They may also contain dyes to give them a certain color or to allow the skin to darken.

Initially, stains caused by these products may be invisible, but age and/or the heating of cleaning may cause them to become more apparent.

How do you prevent stains from sunscreen?
To prevent these stains, follow the directions provided by the manufacturer. The general rule of thumb is to allow the preparation to dry before it contacts a garment. Also wash your hands before handling garments to avoid possible staining. However, it is important to note that despite these precautions, some residue may still transfer to clothing through perspiration.

Can these stains be treated?
The oil component of skin care preparations may not be easily removed in normal washing or dry cleaning procedures, but appropriate stain removal techniques can be successful. For this reason, it is important to tell your cleaner if sunscreens or tanning lotions may have contacted the garment. The more information your cleaner knows about stains, the happier both of you will be when your garment is returned.]

Will Dry Cleaning Make My Clothes Last Longer?

Many of us see dry cleaning as one of those simple facts of life. It’s taken for granted that this is something you’re supposed to do for your delicate garments. But is taking in your articles of clothing worth the extra effort? Will it really make them last longer?
To answer the question, we’ll first need to take a look at what’s actually going on when you send clothes in to be dry cleaned.

What Exactly Is Dry Cleaning?

Let’s start by clearing up any confusion about the name. What “dry cleaning” describes is simply a way of cleaning clothes or other textiles without using water. It’s a process that originated in 1885, and has been improving ever since.
But while dry cleaning doesn’t involve water, it does use a different liquid. Specifically, clothes are cleaned with a gentle petroleum-based solvent called polyethylene (or “perc” for short). Perc dissolves dirt and oils that may be clinging to your clothing, without damaging the underlying fabric.
When you drop off your clothes at the dry cleaners, they’ll be placed into a washing chamber along with a certain amount of this solvent. As the machine rotates, dirt and particles are lifted from the clothing and suspended in the solvent, before being filtered out entirely. Of course, if you have any particularly hardy stains (or any other type of garment damage), these will need a bit of individual special attention. Fortunately, this is a service that the best dry cleaners are fully capable of providing.

A Longer Lifespan For Your Clothing

Back to the initial question: will this process make clothes last longer? The simple answer is “yes” – and here’s why:

Dry Cleaning is Less Abrasive than Washing Machines

Some fabrics are particularly sensitive to water immersion, and/or to the heat and agitation that takes place inside most commercial washing machines. But because dry cleaning drums tumble more slowly and gently – and because the process does not use water – your delicate clothes experience less wear & tear. Why risk damaging that expensive suit, dress, or tablecloth?

Dry Cleaning Preserves Fabric Qualities

Tears and shrinkage are awful, but they aren’t the only way in which machine washing can harm your clothing. Using a gentle solvent like perc, rather than hot water and soapy detergent, will also better preserve the color and texture of your fabrics. If you’ve ever seen a frayed and blotchy wool sweater or silk dress, you’ve probably witnessed machine-induced damage.

Dry Cleaning Tackles Tough Stains

The solvent used in dry cleaning penetrates deeply, dissolving and removing the oils, odors, and tough stains that diminish the garment’s value. As a result, your clothing and linens will maintain that fresh and new look for a much longer period of time.
For over 25 years, Marky's Dry Cleaners has been Denton's dry cleaning provider of choice. Stop by our convenient Denton location today, or give us a call at (940)381-1182.

Velvet: A Royal Fabric

Velvet is one of winter’s fashion favorites, especially crushed velvets and velvet garments with decorative trim. Many types of apparel are made of velvet, including pants, dresses, gowns, coats, capes, and jackets. Velvet is also popular for household items, such as furniture covers and drapes.

What is velvet?

Velvet has long been known as the fabric of royalty. At one time, blue velvet was reserved solely for use by the French king, his family, and favored subjects.

Velvets are made on a double action loom. Two layers of fabric are woven at the same time, and the space between them is interlaced with connecting yarns.

The two layers are then cut apart as they come off the loom, producing two pieces of fabric with an upright pile surface.

True velvet is usually made of rayon, acetate, silk, or a blend of these fibers and has a short, closely-woven pile. Velveteen is similar to velvet, but it is usually made of cotton or cotton/polyester blend and has a shorter pile. Finishes are often applied to velvets to keep the pile erect and resilient, to secure the pile, or to give the fabric body.

What types of problems can velvets experience?

Velvet can experience a variety of problems, including a loss of pile, flattening and matting, pilling and tufting, and shrinkage. Crushed velvets have a tendency to experience a loss of design and distortion from wear alone. Velvets made of acetate pose special problems: the pile can become permanently flattened with moisture, heat, or pressure. As a result, the pile on an acetate velvet dress is more likely to show the effects of wear. Even greater flattening develops if the velvet is brushed or if any pressure is put on it while wet.

How can you keep your velvets fit for royalty?

• Hang velvet garments in a well-ventilated closet after wearing.

• If a velvet garment gets wet, do not apply pressure, as this can flatten the pile.

• Do not iron velvets. Hang in the bathroom and steam the garment to remove any wrinkles.

• Clean velvet garments immediately after use.

• Shake excess spills from the fabric and allow to dry. Do not blot or apply any pressure in damp areas.

• If you do get a stain on a velvet garment, our stain removal experts can help.

Life offers just a handful occasion to let it all loose and dress up in alluringly fascinating and glamorously chic attires. Prom night is high on the list of those days in your life when you dress to impress with your chic, contemporary yet elegant ensembles. Perfectly complementing accessories just add to the flavor of this event.
This year, try something unique and extraordinary to add a tasteful yet alluring kick to your overall look and rock your prom in ultimate swank and style.

A Little Black Leather Dress

Leather is timeless and, of course, you cannot go wrong with black. Every fashion addict knows well how to rock this combo. The best part is that there are countless ways to accessorize your enchanting LBD. We would suggest you to opt for sensuous complementing heels along with a sleek, straight mane. To add depth in your look, you can go for bold smoky eyes and nude lips.

Sleeveless Beaded Attire

We love spring because it allows us to experiment a lot with our look. A sleeveless mini or knee-length attire, embellished with beads is a perfect pick for your prom night. Keeping this attire simple and sweet will highlight your charisma. Bead-studded stilettos along with pastel makeup will ensure that you remain the center of attention.

A Formal Ruffled Prom Gown

Nothing can beat an elegantly crafted maxi dress for a prom night. The style is not only formal but also gives you a princess-like aura. Try to look for a maxi dress in trending colors. Our favorite for this spring is peach and burgundy; however, you can select a hue that complements your skin tone well. Whether you opt for an A-line silhouette with bare shoulders or a deep V-neck with ruffled or laced sleeves, the style will be a sure hit with everyone.

Allover Sequined Dress

To add a touch of glitz and glamour, opt for sequined dress this prom. You can select the length of the attire as per your own body type. Couple the dress with stylish pumps, some elegant jewelry and bronze makeup and voila! You are all set to look mesmerizing this prom.

A Little White Dress

We know for some of you white sounds absolutely dull and boring, however, believe us if complemented well, the white has all the power to give you an amazing look. A mini or midi white dress, embellished well with some beads or pearls and paired with high-heels will give you an enchanting yet exquisite look. You can also opt for some unique jewelry to go with your dress. To break the color, go for bold red lips along with full volume hair. After all white is always right!
Prom is certainly an ideal occasion to portray your fashion taste. Whatever styles you opt for, don’t forget to consider your physique as well as skin tone to select the perfect pieces for you. In addition, the way you carry that style also makes a huge difference. Take a cue from this post and rock your memorable event with ultimate allure and elegance.

Dealing with Missing Buttons: What to Do When Your Shirts Come Back Without Buttons

Dress shirts sent for professional cleaning are typically water-washed with soap, starched, and then pressed on a 3-part (collar/cuffs, sleeves and body) shirt steam/pressing machine. Shirt buttons can break while cleaning, when pressing, or just when trying to button your dress shirt.  While not a catastrophic event, it can be bothersome if you happen to be on a business trip and your important meeting is in an hour.
So, what to do? Here are a few things you can try both before and after your button’s gone missing at the cleaners.
  • There’s a possibility the button was missing before you dropped your shirts and blouses off at the dry cleaner. Take a quick look at your garments before leaving them at the cleaners and point this out to the attendant when dropping the off.  If you can't remember to do this, place a safety pin where the button belongs and that should get the dry cleaner's attention.
  • Top-notch dry cleaning services (including Marky's Dry Cleaners here in the Denton, Texas area) will make the time to check for missing buttons before and after the dry cleaning process is completed, so only take your clothing to a reputable location. Though even the best service will occasionally miss one, you should use someone who makes the effort and replaces the missing buttons before returning the garment to you.
  • You can request that your cotton and cotton-blend shirts and blouses be dry cleaned rather than laundered. This leaves a softer feel on your shirts and blouses and is especially appropriate for delicate items. Shirt creases are not as sharp.  Expect to pay more for this option, as it requires more labor.
  • It’s possible the buttons come off because the thread is loose. Try sewing your buttons back on with professional grade thread or even dental floss, which is incredibly strong.  But make sure the thread color used is the same as for the rest of the buttons.
As for that button you need replaced for the meeting? Check the inside of the garment to make sure there isn’t a spare, usually on a side seam near the bottom of the shirt. Use your travel sewing kit or ask for one at the front desk. Those little kits usually include one or two buttons that will do in a pinch, and most people will not notice your buttons don’t match. You can also try taking a button from the part of the shirt that gets tucked in and move it to the visible location.
A good dry cleaning service will often replace your shirt buttons free of charge as part of their services. Some dry cleaners will even give you a discount on future dry cleaning services if you have to return for button replacement. Don’t be afraid to ask – reputable dry cleaners want to earn your trust and keep your business.

Money Saving Tips

Money Saving Tips
Even the experts cannot agree on when the recession will ease, some say 9/09, others 10/09.  With up to a year and a half in front of us, try some of these suggestions to keep more money in your pocket:
Ø  Turn off lights and air conditioning when not in the room, in the house, or at work. This goes for the big corps too.  Even better, use smart, programmable units and save hundreds.
Ø  Switch to fluorescent lights, the savings is significant. Look for full-spectrum bulbs. If you really don’t like all fluorescent light, use incandescent bulbs in strategic places, like where you read.
Ø  Stop buying new clothing every season; take better care of the clothes you already own.
Ø  Minimize convenience item purchases. Wherever possible, use dishcloths rather than paper towels, a sports bottle filled with filtered water rather than a new bottle of water,  etc.
Ø  Make your own greeting cards and your own gourmet coffee at home.
Ø  Check out movies at your library before buying or renting them.  It’s free!

Ø  Before you dial 411, use the phone book or the internet to look up the number.

Your Clothes Matter

Your Clothes Matter

The way you dress does matter. In fact, by most accounts, it matters a lot.
According to Cynthia Nellis, a style expert at about.com, you have to always put forward your best image:  “If casual wear is acceptable at the job, it has to be freshly cleaned and neat to take it a notch above others that presume casual wear means sloppy. They will never make a good first impression.”
Just behind communication and presentation skills, how someone is dressed was the most important attribute in getting and keeping a job, according to a study by Total Executive, Inc. and Syracuse University.

We’re Not Casual About Casual Wear

Sure, you may be able to wash your casual clothing at home, but time spent doing that along with the most hated household chore — ironing—only takes away time from family and other pursuits.
We have the skills to make your clothes look and feel their best by creating a crispness that simply cannot be duplicated with home care.
No matter what the surroundings and circumstances, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

How You Can Help

  • Stains and soil left too long can be impossible to remove. Studies by the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute show that after aging for only one week, 20% of stains cannot be removed satisfactorily. After three weeks, this increases to 47%. If staining occurs, bring it to us as soon as possible.
  • Don’t press stained or soiled clothes. Heat is another factor that makes stains more difficult to remove.
  • Please point out spills such as those from white wine, fruit juices, or soft drinks, or other stains that may not be visible, when you bring in your cleaning. These invisible stains require special attention by us in order to prevent them from permanently discoloring your item.
  • Perspiration can cause dyes in fabrics to change color so, if possible, protect your garments from excessive contact with perspiration.
  • Always allow lotions, antiperspirants, perfume, and other toiletries to dry before you get dressed. These products can contain ingredients that cause color loss or color changes in your garments.
  • Protect your garments from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or strong artificial lights. This too can affect the color in your items.
  • Before putting clothes away for storage, have them cleaned to remove stains first. This prevents insects from causing holes in the fabric, and stains from ageing and discoloring.
  • Clean all matching pieces together. Whether your work surroundings call for appropriate casual or traditional attire, we know that how you look does matter. That’s one of the reasons we work hard for you and all that you wear.

Clothing Care - The Single Biggest Mistake

Well, I did it.  I own a dry cleaner and I made the single biggest mistake possible in clothing care.
I have a white jacket for my morning walks with Chuy.  When the temperatures dropped a couple of weeks ago, I pulled it out of the closet only to find a big yellow spot right on the front that looked a lot like mustard. On my white jacket!
I’m sure you know to always put your clothes away clean when the seasons change.  I didn’t do that so I was at the mercy of the fabric, the stain and the knowledge of my dry cleaning spotter...who happens to be Alma (luckily Alma, is a  “Certified Garment Care Professionals” and know all about spot removal, fabrics and cleaning techniques).  They can’t guarantee that she can get out every stain, but if anyone can, Alma can do it.
Fortunately for me, Alma removed the spot from my jacket without fading the color of the jacket in the area of the stain.
So the biggest mistake you can make in caring for your clothes is to not keep them clean.  And while this may sound a bit self-serving since I’m in the dry cleaning business...it’s just the truth about clothing care.
Here are my suggestions for protecting the investment in your clothes:
1. Clean your clothes soon after wearing them.  Don’t wait several weeks between visits to your laundry room or to Comet Cleaners.  And when the season changes, don’t put your clothes away dirty.  Stains have a better chance to set in and they won’t be ready to wear when the season changes again.
2. Clean your clothes often enough.  Trying to get an extra time wearing a dress shirt, your favorite blouse, or even those dress pants might seem like a frugal thing to do.  But food spills, perspiration and even deodorant can cause stains.  The sooner you tend to the problem, the better chance you have of not having to replace the garment early.
3. Don’t try to treat those spots yourself unless you really know what you’re doing.  Magic formulas of hairspray or Windex to remove ink on a dress shirt rarely work and most often compound the problem. If you find a spot, blot it off and let us help with it...right away.

I have a regular customer on Hilton Head island who ships any garment with a stain to me to handle.  Alma does her magic and I ship it back.
If you live in the Highland Village, Lantana, or the 76205 zip code in Denton and are interest in dry cleaning pickup and delivery have a look at my delivery service Marky's Dry Cleaners.

How To Make Your Leather Boots Last

How To Make Your Leather Boots Last

Rain, mud, snow and salt are just a few of the conditions you may find yourself ankle-deep in, so it’s best to care for your boots on a regular basis. Depending on the material, consider waterproofing before wearing them regularly – consult with an associate or the manufacturer if you’re unsure about application. Also, brush them off, wiping away the dirt, salt, or any other debris after each wear.

To keep your boots looking good as new, treat them with a leather oil or cream to provide moisture (this can be messy, so consider applying in a well-ventilated area over old newspapers.)

If the weather in your area is particularly inclement, consider adding a traction sole to keep your footing solid. And when your boots do begin to show signs of wear, don’t fret – check with your local shoe repair person and look into a re-sole. Love your boots and your boots will love you!

Why Invest in a Mesh Laundry Bag?

hole in shirt
Have you ever washed a delicate blouse only to pull it out and realize it's covered in snags and tears?  How about discovered mystery holes in your favorite t-shirt?  Comet Cleaners in Denton Texas swears by the use of mesh laundry bags and here we will discuss why we think every household should own at least one.
It's happened to everyone and I've had to throw away more clothes than I'd like to admit because of it.  Designers will keep using delicate fabrics and mass producers will keep using low quality fabrics, both of which can result in holes, snags, and tears in some of your favorite items.  While not a fool proof option, using a mesh bag to clean these items can greatly reduce the risk of damage to your clothing and increase it's lifespan.

meshbag phixr
The humble but oh-so-versitile mesh laundry bag is best used with one or two items at a time.  It works by creating a physical barrier against the contents and the outside items.  This reduces the amount of friction on the actual delicate pieces and guards against unwanted snagging and such from buttons, hooks, and other adornments on other items in the wash.
The mesh also has the perfect design to allow sufficient water flow to ensure your clothes get just as clean as they would if they were loose.
Also known as a lingerie bag, it's long been used just for nighties, slips, and pantyhose.  Expand your horizons and use it for so much more.

Other things to note:

  • Some mesh bags come with seperate compartments inside, perfect for washing two or three blouses at once!
  • Using a mesh bag to wash a sweater can help reduce pilling.
  • Mesh bags are a great way to wash sneakers!
  • Use mesh bags to separate special needs clothing from the general load such as items that must be hung or laid flat to dry.
At Comet Cleaners in Denton Texas, we are a full service Dry Cleaners and would love to take on the task of cleaning your delicates.

Be Photogenic with Proper Dry Cleaning and Garment Selection

photogenic
It's inevitable that someone will at some point snap a picture of you. Sometimes you'll be pleasantly surprised by the resulting photo, but more often than not, you will find it repulsive. While the world is sprinkled with folks who always seem to take a great picture, most of us struggle and often require multiple takes before finding a photo that is suitable to be seen.
Being Photogenic is not about being a beauty queen or king. It refers more to being able to highlight your attractive attributes in photos. Knowing what angles complement your face, knowing what you look like when you smile, and wearing the right outfit all play a part in the making of the perfect photo. Even when not under the scrutiny of a camera, knowing how to highlight your best attributes can be a huge benefit. As a Dry Cleaners in Denton Texas, our forte is clothing of all kinds. Posing for pictures can be learned through trial and error, or by a professional photographer, but we can give you the rundown on clothes!

stripes phixrSelecting the right clothing can be difficult. Color and clothing style are two of the most important factors for a great photo.Stay away from patterns that are overly busy. They can really distract from the main focus- you! It's best to also avoid stripes, vertical or horizontal.Since we are three dimensional, placing our image in a two dimensional format is already going to give bizarre illusions. Any kind of stripe will only enhance that illusion. For example, horizontal stripes tend to make something appear wider while vertical stripes can give the illusion of elongation. You may think that is a good thing, and there are always exceptions to the rule, but you'll just have to see what works for you. For those of us who prefer to present ourselves with their natural attributes, vertical stripes can minimize the bust or elongate the torso leading to an undesired un-proportional effect.
It's also best to avoid a single color, especially one that may match the background. This can make you appear bland and washed out. Get to know your skin tone and pick colors that complement you and your surroundings. Hair color can also play a part in selecting the best colors on you. Again, trial and error may be your best bet.
Digital cameras have difficulty properly displaying closely spaced stripes, small patterns, and the colors black, white, and red. Such bold colors can throw off the contrast making you appear strangely colored. Pay careful attention to the condition of your clothes. Worn or faded clothing can give the wrong impression. For photo-worthy clothes, be sure to always have them properly cared for by a Professional Dry Cleaners.

Style of clothing is an equally important factor to consider. Avoid trendy clothing that can date the photo. The last thing you'd want is someone looking at this picture in a few years from now gawking over your huge sleeves or pronounced shoulder pads like we do over photos from the 80's. Stick with simple, classic pieces.

Following our tips can ensure the best photo experience. Though we can't guarantee you'll come out looking like a movie star, paying careful attention to what you wear is a major step in creating a great picture. Take time to find what works for you; take time to ensure your clothes look their best by bringing them to us at Comet Cleaners in Denton Texas.

Tips for cleaning white clothes

Whites are the toughest clothes to keep looking crisp and clean, with our crazy lives full of work, school, play, pets and messy meals. Check out these tips for cleaning your white clothes:

Always, always, always sort

Even if you’ve washed your favorite pair of blue jeans twenty times, there’s always the chance that dyes or additives to the denim fabric can mix into the water. Even a small bit of color can make whites appear dingy or stained, so always be sure to take the time to sort your whites from your colors.

Heat is your friend

Although many people have begun to wash every load in cold or cool water to save on energy bills and protect the environment, whites need truly hot water to remain looking bright and clean. For most fabrics, hot water will always clean better, but be sure to consult the care tag to be sure it won’t cause shrinking in a particular garment.

When life gives you lemons, use the juice

If you’re accustomed to using bleach in your white loads, you know that it can begin to have a graying quality on clothing after many washes, not to mention it has been known to irritate delicate skin. Lemon juice, when added to a washer, has natural whitening qualities that will keep your clothes looking brand new in a much gentler manner than bleach.

Ditch the dryer

Natural fabrics like cotton can begin to fray in overly hot dryers, making them look aged. To maintain that like-new look, dry your whites outdoors in the sunlight whenever possible. They’ll dry more quickly, and the sun’s rays actually have whitening and disinfecting properties that keep your clothes both brighter and healthier.

Pretreat those nasty stains

Although it takes extra time, pretreating stains on your whites will save you time and money in the end. Even if you’re using a powerful detergent in hot water for your wash cycle, it may not be enough to completely lift a stain from a white garment. Pretreating formulas or homemade pastes made from laundry detergent and a little water help to dissolve stains before they go into the wash, making it more likely that a wash cycle will completely erase the stain.
If you’ve been bleaching your dingy, dirty whites with no success, employ these tips for any new white clothing you purchase and you’ll be sure to see positive results. Proper care of white clothing saves you time and money, and it can be accomplished without using harsh chemicals that can harm your family and your clothing.
Here are five easy tips from the folks at TLC to help you ditch the dingy, stained laundry and keep your whites looking like new, all without using harsh bleach chemicals.

Ever wonder what those funny symbols mean on the care label?

What do those crazy symbols mean?

Many of today’s garments have care labels with symbols that may appear to be hieroglyphics to some.  These labels give the consumer and the Professional Dry Cleaner invaluable information about the care required to keep your garment in like new condition for as long as possible.  Some labels have only these symbols.  Other will have a combination of symbols and text to help you understand what is the best way to care for your clothes.

An industry standard for these symbols is available on line at http://www.textileaffairs.com/lguide.htm. The first page of this guide just categorizes the labels. Click on the individual cleaning methods for more detailed symbols.

At Comet Cleaners we are always looking for ways to make your clothing care easier and more affordable.  Let me here from you if you’ve got questions about how to care for any item.

Did Your Dry Cleaner Shrink Your Blouse?

So Why Did Your Blouse Shrink?Dry Cleaners Birmingham Alabama
A customer recently asked us about a problem she had with one of her St. Johns blouses (the photo to the right is not a St. John's blouse).  St. Johns is a popular label and usually good quality.  She washed it at home and allowed it to air dry on a clean towel according to care label instructions.  So did she do something wrong or is a problem with the blouse?
My opinion is the fabric in the blouse was not pre-shrunk so when the blouse was washed, it shrank to a smaller size.  Garments should be made from fabric that is pre-shrunk and when this has not been done, it is a manufacturer’s defect.
Garment manufacturers stretch fabric as much as possible to get the maximum amount of fabric when making a garment.  When the garment is washed, it returns to its natural state.  When manufacturers use pre-shrunk fabric, that problem is solved.
If shrinkage occurs when you followed care label instructions, here’s how to handle the problem:
  • Return it to the retailer.  Responsible retailers will replace the garment or refund your money.
  • If you get no satisfaction from the retailer, contact the manufacturer.  Use the label information, including the Registered Number (“RN#”) and a quick Google search and you’re usually just a phone call away from a solution...depending on the customer friendly orientation of the retailer or manufacturer.
We have helped scores of customers resolve problems like this and have found that most manufacturers keep data bases on complaints on the different garments.  We’ve heard comments from customer service representatives like, “Yes, we are having a problem with this item.  May we ship you a replacement that should not shrink?”
If you have a garment that shrinks but has been cleaned according to care label instructions, it’s not the fault of the person cleaning the garment...you or your dry cleaner.  We can help you resolve this type of problem.
